Do History Films Make It in the Cinema?

I can never get my partner to go see one! Only on DVD for us.
clipped from uk.movies.yahoo.com

Tom Cruise stars in 'Valkyrie', released in cinemas this week, which got us thinking about the divide in success between past and present themed war films.

There's a school of thought among the studios which says cinema fans aren't interested in watching war films on the big screen anymore due to the current hostilities in the Middle East, and if we are watching war films it's generally on DVD. Supporting their claim, we can see that the latest war flick set in Jordan, 'Body of Lies' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe performed poorly at the box office, despite being directed by action go-to man Ridley Scott who had huge success in 2001 with 'Black Hawk Down'.

1929: The Great Crash

Saturday 24 January
9:00pm - 10:00pm
BBC2

In 1929 Groucho Marx, a sceptical investor who had nonetheless put all his savings in the booming stock market, went to see his broker and asked in amazement how it was that share prices kept going up and up. His broker placated him with reassuring words about the new worldwide market and Marx continued to invest. In the crash that followed that October he lost everything he’d earned from his films. Like the rest of this programme, it’s a salutary tale with thumping reminders of the present woes in the economy. The programme only has to walk us patiently through the history of the crash and the parallels fairly scream at you, although the markets of the 1920s were, it seems, more corrupt: “It was a big casino,” recalls one contributor “and it was rigged by professional investors.” The really gloomy part of the story is the ending: that a crash led to a depression, which ultimately led to war.

William "Bill" Stone, 108, took part in the 90th Anniversary of the Great War Armistice in London in November 2008.

Mr Stone's daughter, Anne Davidson, said: "William had a remarkable, long, healthy and happy life.

"He thoroughly enjoyed going to events, meeting people and, whenever possible, regaling those around him with his fund of Naval stories and jokes.

"He loved singing, knew most hymns by heart and had an amazing repertoire of old-time songs - often with alternative words.
