LINK TO BBC SITE and iPlayer links
Andrew Marr examines Britain in the 1930s, when the financial crash on Wall Street sent shockwaves through the country and brought widespread chaos. As fascism continued its expansion across Europe, politicians at home seemed to choose to ignore the problem, except for the lone voice of Winston Churchill warning of the horrors to come.
Video is a collection from Pathe of newsreels from the 1930s. So cheesy!

Thurs 26/11/09: 8pm Five - The Hunt for Red October: The True Story

Historical documentary exploring the real-life events that inspired the Tom Clancy novel and film, 'The Hunt for Red October'. In 1975, a disgruntled Soviet officer led a mutiny on board a state-of-the-art Russian warship. Unlike the movie captain portrayed by Sean Connery, this maverick sought to cause a revolution in his own land - and almost sparked a war in the process. Great topping to a Cold War Unit

Monday 23rd November 2009
9pm Sky3 Vic Reeves Investigates Jack the Ripper
Sky3 - 108 is also on Freeview on 11 and Virgin 122

Be sneaky and catch the entire episode on youtube. Part 1 is available below

If you're expecting belly laughs from comedian Vic Reeves, this investigative documentary will come as a bit of a surprise. It actually does what it says on the tin as Reeves goes into (fairly) straight mode to delve into the series of brutal and bloody murders that rocked London's East End in 1888.

That being said, Reeves adds a touch of theatrical presentation as he explores the labyrinth of passages in London's Whitechapel to uncover the gruesome and horrific killings. And as the investigation proceeds, we discover that Jack may have been a butcher, a doctor, a lunatic, or even an aristocrat.

So can Reeves add significantly to the Jack the Ripper story, and do we get any nearer to uncovering the murderer's identity? With a mix of historians and leading experts, all offering their own take on the case, it's certainly a good starting point if you're not up on mad Jack. And in Reeves, we definitely have a man who wouldn't let it lie.

WEDS 18/11/09: BBC2 9pm Andrew Marr's The Making of Modern Britain

In the 1920s, Imperial Britannia was sliding from view and a more modern Britain tried everything new and asked endless questions about how we should live our lives. A great new age of experiment arrived in politics, writing, art, sex and drugs. Survivors of the Great War threw themselves into the new urban scene of nightclubs, cocktails and jazz, where royalty, gangsters and Hollywood stars rubbed shoulders with new money.

Yes, Marr is a little annoying but the series is okay and can be used in segments in class. Looking at 1920s Jazz Britain one has to think of the USA's Jazz Age. Link to BBC site

However, Britain still had its empire during the 1920s so therefore here is an Empire Day video below

Followed by a clip from Michael Collins. A hero to most, to others something else. Britain was slowly changing.

MON & TUES 16&17/11/09: 9pm Channel 4 The Queen in 3D

The incredible story of young film makers Bob Angell and Arthur Wooster, as they experimented with the technology of the future, using a pioneering 3D camera rig to film a remarkable 3D colour newsreel they named 'Royal Review'.

Episode 2 looks at post war Britain
- More footage from the 'Royal Review' shows the Queen, in glorious 3D, arrive at the Derby, the bookies at work, the crowds loving the occasion and the race itself. Would the Queen's own horse, Aureole, win the race? Or would Britain's greatest jockey ever, Gordon Richards, finally triumph after 27 previous Derbys?

VIDEO CLIP IS Part two of Lord Wakehurst's film about the death of King George VI and The Queen's Accession and Coronation. Lord Wakehurst (1895-1970) was a Conservative MP, Governor of New South Wales.

MON 16/11/09: 10pm Yesterday Channel Sven Wonders of the Industrial World

The period of over 125 years from the beginning of the 19th century saw the creation of some of the world's most remarkable feats of engineering.

The wonders described here cover a great range. They include Isambard Kingdom Brunel's extraordinary ship - the Great Eastern, sometimes known as the Crystal Palace of the Seas - which its designer hoped would travel between the two farthest ends of the British empire, and the ground-breaking Panama Canal, which linked the Atlantic and Pacific oceans more than half a century later.

View a clip from the episode below (it is the last ten minutes of the episode so stop at 1:45)

2012: Yes to the Mayans - No to the film

Well, I am late putting up my posts due to the film 2012.

Just leave your brain back in the car park and enjoy the sugar coated devastation of the human race, with the occassional swear word.
View the trailer below and along with a great summary clip from the top series 'What the Ancients Did For Us!" Chichen Itza is a beautiful and scary place.

FRI 13/11/09: BBC 2 7pm - Andrew Marr's Modern Britain Ep3

Andrew Marr's epic series charting the events that shaped Britain.
Link to episode 3 on BBC iPlayer

Britain gets its first taste of total war. Marr argues that no shock has ever hit these islands with quite the force of what became known as the Great War. It transformed the lives of the British people - most dramatically the millions who fought on the frontline but also those at home who were bereaved, bombed, uprooted and bankrupted.

With vivid archive and extraordinary anecdotes, Andrew Marr tells the story of Lord Kitchener's volunteer army - the biggest in history. He also describes German gun-boat assaults on the north-east coast of England; the strange disappearance of Britain's First Sea Lord at the height of the war; the first bomb ever to fall on Britain; and the sex scandal that threatened to destroy the British establishment.

"Changeling" All this week on Sky Premiere. Yes I am really back.

Updates will be one or two days ahead, so you can tell friends, students and teachers what is available.

Sky Movies Premiere CHANGELING
8pm and showing the rest of the week...

Angelina Jolie is a telephone operator and single mother who finds herself in a Kafkaesque nightmare when her son goes missing and an indifferent LAPD attempt to fob her off with another boy. Refusing to play along, she discovers hell hath no fury like bent coppers scorned… Following the grand set pieces of Letters from Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwood harkens back to the golden era of 1940s melodrama with this sprawling, hard hitting true story of child abduction, police corruption and a fight for justice in 1920s LA.

Great film for showing the life of people during this era

Tues 10/11/09: C4 1pm K-19: The Widowmaker

Based on a real-life incident, Kathryn Bigelow's tense film stars Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson as Alexei Vostrikov, the commander of Russia's first nuclear submarine, and Mikhail Polenin, his executive officer, whose first test voyage ends in disaster when the reactor fails. The only hope is for the crew to repair it at the risk of fatal irradiation.

MON 9/1109: ITV1 10:35pm The Time Machine - Guy Pearce

There is a great sequence in the film where you can see the passage of time.

A 19th-century scientist resolves to prove time travel is possible - and when his fiancee is killed, he embarks on a challenging mission to change the course of history. However, although his time machine works, he is still unable to alter past events - and as he journeys into the future, he finds himself in a terrifying situation.
