I like Niall Ferguson and I don't like what he has to say, or is it more the way he says it. I remember watching repeats of the original Civilisation program and I found it extremely boring and dense. Ferguson's program fall into the same trap with his narrative but his on screen commentary and insightful use of sources gives a dramatic or comedic punch when needed. The latest episode pushes the former to the foreground as he discusses the medical advancements made in European ruled Africa. The appraoch is fair and balanced, has he gives credit to French egalitarian social and political reforms and attacks the horror of eugenics. The startling and graphic photographs of atrocities had the desired effect on this viewer. I was appalled yet transfixed. His points are clear but the delivery is not always so effective. Overall, I have enjoyed the series and latest was certainly the most engaging and interesting so far.
The new Russell Crowe movie does show how life was for some during the medieval age, just ignore the shiny and the new costumes and you can have fun.

This somewhat dry series continues the ridiculous "killer app" argument about the West's predominance and potential decline. This episode does give a fair insight into the race for Africa and the how Europe was able to maintain it's grip of the continent. History teachers and 6th form only.
6pm Sky Modern Greats - Pearl Harbor. Nuff said.

Channel 4 at 8pm sees Bettany Hughes considers the fourth age, between 410 and 1066AD, a period of chaos that lead to an independent and wealthy Britain.
The Tudors at 10pm is clearly only for 6th Form only. It is an excellent episode that shows Katherine Parr's religious persuasion and Henry VIII's political paranoia, a distinct change from his optimistic ascension.
3/7 The Third Age ( 43-410AD) Bettany Hughes explores the period of History where Britain was a Roman colony and transformed the isle into a multicultural society. But when the Romans departed, the island was left wide open to further invasion.
Back to back episodes, including how Allied forces fought German warships, the history of the Battle of the Bulge, and the result of the Bomber raids on Germany.
