Wed 9pm: Hairspray on Film 4 (Yes, it's History)

I end my Black People's of North America with clips from the film. It's a nice fun clip after the water cannon, protest, burning buses of the black and white clips from the newsreels at the time. Of course questions of reliability should be raised. We are rightly sensitive when approaching this topic with 12 year olds but the reality cannot be ignored. I remember my teacher showing graphic scenes of buses burning, lynchings and more to drive home the horrors of segregation and race discrimination. I am glad he did as it had a profound affect on many of classmates and I.
